Q+A Series - Jasmine Flowers Mazyck

To celebrate the honorees from the DAA’s 2022 Gala, the DAA team has launched a Q + A series to highlight the meaningful work of communicators who are driving forward diversity, equity and inclusion in the industry. The interview below was conducted by Jenny Ho.

“I advise everyone to find your people, and be specific in your ask. “Your people'' means your mentors, or your own board of advisors. These people are the ones that are willing to share their experiences, take you under their wings, and give you a safe space where you can learn and make mistakes. Having this support can propel your career as you move forward.”

-Jasmine Flowers Mazyck, Managing Director of Flowers Communications Group

Please tell us about your current role in the communications industry.

In 2022, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to join Flowers Communications Group (FCG) and take a new and exciting career pivot into the communications industry. Prior to joining FCG, I spent about 18 years in the management consulting industry at Deloitte and McKinsey & Company. As Managing Director at FCG, I wear many hats, but my role primarily focuses on ensuring alignment with our business objectives by providing strategic counsel related to our business development, agency marketing, talent strategy, and our overall agency growth.  Tapping into my prior consulting experience, I also support accounts providing senior counsel on DE&I. I enjoy engaging with so many aspects of FCG!

What is one piece of advice you would give other diverse professionals within the

industry as they progress in their careers?

My advice would be to give yourself time for exposure to diversified experiences and truly be intentional about owning your career. Diversified experiences enable you to build a strong transferable toolkit of communications skills and gives you the insight to key in on where you want to build expertise in your career. Part of building expertise is being intentional and specific about what you want to achieve in your career, creating a plan, and allowing for flexibility around iterating your plan because paths and aspirations can change. The key is to always have a sense of what you want to do and where you want to be. Remember that if it doesn’t challenge you, then it likely won’t enable you to grow. When you get comfortable, consider taking advantage of exploring opportunities that stretch you beyond your comfort zone.

I also advise everyone to find your people, and be specific in your ask. “Your people'' means your mentors, or your own board of advisors. These people are the ones that are willing to share their experiences, take you under their wings, and give you a safe space where you can learn and make mistakes. Having this support can propel your career as you move forward.

Looking into 2023, what are you most excited to achieve professionally?

I’m most excited about continuing to lead and grow the next generation of diverse communicators and creatives at FCG, with the aspiration that they become the leaders of the future and further catapult representation in C-Suites, Board Rooms, and senior leadership across the industry. I am also honored to be actively engaged as a board member for the PR Council (PRC). I have the opportunity to contribute my experiences to help influence the goals and the path forward that will shape the future of our industry.
